From Lukewarm to On Fire
Lukewarm Faith Is Not a Small Thing.
If you've spent any time in Christian spaces, you've heard the term lukewarm Christian. It's a label used to distinguish true followers of Christ from those who are merely “believers”. But what is a lukewarm Christian really, and how do you avoid becoming one — or stop being one?
Let's start with where the term comes from:
"I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!" — Revelation 3:15–16 (NLT)
The lesson here is uncomfortable but clear: we cannot serve two masters. You either live for God and follow His instructions, or you don't. Of course, all of us fall short of God's glory. But what makes someone a true Christian isn't perfection — it's a heart that recognizes its mistakes, repents, gets back up, and keeps following God through the failure.
There's a massive difference between believing in Jesus and following Jesus. Even the demons know who He is.
"You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror." — James 2:19 (NLT)
So belief alone isn't the marker. Action is. Many people believe in God, attend church on Sunday, and quote the right verses — but never let His Word actually shape how they live. Is this you?
"But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." — James 1:22 (NLT)
Belief alone isn't enough. You can mentally agree that Jesus is Lord and still never let Him be Lord of your life. True faith means accepting Him into your heart and mind — not just acknowledging Him, but receiving Him.
"If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." — Romans 10:9 (NLT)
And once you accept Him, you surrender. You lay down your own way of living and pick up your cross. Jesus said it plainly:
"If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me." — Luke 9:23 (NLT)
Surrender like this doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't happen through willpower alone. It's the natural fruit of spending genuine time with God — because the closer you get to Him, the more your grip on your old life loosens, and the more your heart aligns with His. Here's the truth at the heart of it: if someone is lukewarm, it almost always points to one thing — they aren't spending enough time in God's presence. Yes, it's really that simple.
When you devote real time to Jesus Christ— praying, reading the Bible, worshipping, sitting in stillness with Him — He transforms you. When we get into the Word of God, His Word gets into us. It changes our desires, our fears, our aspirations, and the things we run toward. Soak up His presence, and the Holy Spirit will dwell in you — convicting you, guiding you, and aligning your life with God's will.
That's the difference between lukewarm and on fire. Not how much you know — but how much time you actually spend with Him.
